One version of a gene at a particular location in the genome. Different alleles can contribute to different inherited traits.

Start with the context
What this term helps describe.
Plant and genetics terms describe biological structures, inheritance, propagation, development, and the range of traits a plant may express.
No alternate label is treated as authoritative for Allele in this glossary. If another source uses different language, compare its definition and context before assuming equivalence.
A responsible use
“In this context, Allele means: One version of a gene at a particular location in the genome. Different alleles can contribute to different inherited traits.” The definition is kept separate from any claim about an individual outcome.
Why Allele matters.
The goal is not memorizing jargon. It is knowing what a word lets you conclude—and where the conclusion must stop.
01
Genetics can shape possibilities, but it does not freeze a plant into one result. Seed-grown siblings can differ, cloned plants can express differently, and cultivation or post-harvest conditions can change the material eventually observed or tested.
02
For named cannabis lines, provenance matters. A breeder statement, a grower record, a genetic test, a photograph, and a laboratory panel are different records. Strong profiles identify which record supports which part of the story.
Visual context—not product proof.
Glandular trichomes are visible plant structures associated with resin production. Appearance alone cannot establish potency or safety.
The definition should make a claim clearer, not make it sound more certain than the evidence allows.
Common mistake
Visual similarity is not proof of shared lineage, and a strain name is not a genetic certificate. Botanical terms should describe actual structures or processes without being stretched into potency or effect claims.
Better practice
When identity is uncertain, say so. A documented uncertainty is more useful than an invented breeder, lineage, phenotype, or origin story.
Allele alone does not establish: identity beyond its documented scope, contaminant safety, a guaranteed experience, a medical benefit, a safe dose, or legal authorization.
Put the term to work
Questions that keep the learning moving.
01Is this a structure, inherited trait, or observed expression?
02Was the plant seed-grown or clonally propagated?
03Is the identity documented to a source?
04Could environment or handling explain the difference?
These sources provide regulatory, scientific, public-health, or laboratory context. Their presence does not mean every sentence is a direct quotation or that a broad source proves a specific medical claim.
